Mah Jongg -V-G-A- Utilities
for
Version 3.0
-> PAKTIL.COM
-> UNPAKTIL.COM
-> VIEWSET.EXE
-> EDITHOF.EXE
The utility files, Mah Jongg -V-G-A-, The Draftsman, and all associated
documentation files are Copyright 1988-90 by Ron Balewski. Any
distribution in violation of the PERMISSION TO COPY section of the
MNVGA30 manual shall be treated as a violation of the US Copyright laws.
PAKTIL.COM
This utility will pack all 44 .TIL files and a PAL.CFG file into
one Vnn.TIS tileset file.
To use PAKTIL, you must first be sure that the current subdirectory
contains all necessary .TIL and .CFG files and that PAKTIL.COM is in the
current subdirectory or is accessable thru a PATH (if you don't
understand the DOS PATH command, please consult your DOS manual). Then,
just type PAKTIL.
PAKTIL will NOT overwrite any existing .TIS files. It will look
for any "open space" between V01.TIS and V99.TIS and use this as the
name of the file it creates.
Once PAKTIL successfully generates a .TIS file from the tiles, all
.TIL and PAL.CFG files can be deleted.
UNPAKTIL.COM
UNPAKTIL will take a .TIS tile set file and "break it apart" into
44 .TIL files and one PAL.CFG. The individual files can then be used
with The Draftsman or can be selectively replaced with other tiles.
To use UNPAKTIL, you must first be sure that the current
subdirectory is where you want the .TIL files to go. For ease of use,
UNPAKTIL should also be in the current subdirectory or accessable thru a
PATH (this is not required, however). Then, type:
UNPAKTIL filename.ext
where "filename.ext" is the path (if not current), filename, and
extension of the .TIL file that you wish to split.

Starting with MJVGA version 3.0, VIEWSET.EXE is no longer included on
the MJVGA disk because of space limitations. If you have an older
version of MJVGA, please continue to use the VIEWSET.EXE file from
that version. If you don't have a copy of VIEWSET.EXE, an
improved version of the program is now included on the PCX2TIS
utility diskette, which is available directly from me TO REGISTERED
USERS ONLY for $3.00.
VIEWSET.EXE
First, let me apologize for the size of this simple little program.
I'm using a new and far-from-optimized graphics menu library for file
selection and mouse control. It's not the most bug-free library
I've ever used, either. But I bought it, so by God I'm gonna use it!
Besides, it DOES make make programming a lot more convenient, it DOES
look kinda "cool", and it's not TOO terribly buggy!
To use it, first be sure that your current directory contains your
tile set .TIS files. Also be sure that VIEWSET.EXE is available either
directly or thru a path. Then just type VIEWSET.
You'll be given a list of all .TIS files in the current directory.
Just select one by left-clicking on it, then left-click OK to view the
tiles.
You can magnify any of the tiles by left-clicking on it. Then
left-click to return to the tiles screen.
To exit the tiles screen, just right-click (or left-click anywhere
there's not a tile). You'll be returned to the file selection menu
where you'll be able to select another tile set for viewing.
To exit VIEWSET completely, just return to the file selection menu
and left-click CANCEL (or anywhere outside of the menu box).
EDITHOF.EXE
Here's another one of those over-inflated files using that goofy
new library. Oh, well -- it's only disk space!
The purpose of this utility is to edit or delete entries in the
MJVGA Hall of Fame file. Note that MJVGA will NOT create a hall of fame
file until the first name is entered. It will then create a HIDDEN file
called MJVGA.HOF. If you attempt to run EDITHOF.EXE before MJVGA has
created MJVGA.HOF, you will just be told that no hall-fo-fame file
exists.
When you first start EDITHOF, you'll be asked for a password. When
MJVGA creates MJVGA.HOF, the default password is PASSWORD (in upper
case). You can, of course, change this password to your own. More on
that shortly.
From here, EDITHOF is quite simple to use (probably because it
doesn't do much). Let me talk briefly about each menu item in order.
Delete Entries
===============
When you select this option, a box of buttons will appear. Just
turn "on" the buttons corresponding to the hall-of-fame entries you'd
like to delete. The buttons are turned "on" or "off" by simply clicking
on them. When you've selected all the entries to be deleted, just click
on the DONE button. If you change your mind, clidk on CANCEL.
Edit Name
=========
When you select this option, you must select a name field by
pressing a number key from 1 to 0 (for 10). If you decide not to edit a
name, just press the ESCape.
When you're editing a name, the left & right arrow keys will move
the cursor. Any other key will overwrite the current character. When
you're done editing press ENTER (or ESCape to cancel the edit).
Read HOF File
=============
If you edit or delete entries, but decide you shouldn't have, you
can re-load the HOF file by selecting this option. No changes are
written to the HOF file until you select the "Write HOF File" option.
Write HOF File
==============
This selection will write all your changes to the HOF file.
Changes will NOT be saved unless you select this option. You MUST
explicitly inform EDITHOF that you DO want to re-write the HOF file.
Password
========
This option will prompt you for a new password for access to the
HOF file. Once the password is entered and the "Write HOF File" option
selected, the password will be updated. Please REMEMBER YOUR NEW
PASSWORD!!! It is encrypted within the file -- you CANNOT simply look
at the HOF file with a disk utility such as Norton Utilities and see the
password! Also, note that the password is case sensitive. Capital
letters are NOT the same as small letters!!
Quit
====
This one's easy. It returns you to DOS!
One final note: You can drag the little menu box around by pressing
the left mouse button when the pointer is on the top MENU bar. Moving
the mouse will cause the menu box to move. Release the mouse button
when the menu box is where you want it. This feature alone is well
worth the outrageous price of that screwy library!!!
